Prior to this scene: Lights and set shifted to reveal Pike’s quarters. Pike’s body is surrounded by wires, prosthetics, and life-support, including a brain-scan revealing imagery and other neurological readings on Pike’s brain activity. While Kirk, and McCoy regard the array of technology with awe, Vina sings telepathically to Spock about an unknown peril ahead, and Spock replies both with doubts and reassurances.
